NOTICE TO
Ship Owners/ Managers/ Operators | Flag State Administrations | Surveyors/ Auditors
The Day of the seafarer is an official United Nations international observance day organized by IMO and celebrated on the 25th of June reaching millions of people worldwide. Day of the seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
This year’s theme, “Seafarers Matter”, wants to particularly engage ports and seafarer centres to demonstrate how much seafarers matter to them. The idea is for ports and seafarer centres to share and showcase best practices in seafarer support and welfare.
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said: “This year in our Day of the Seafarer campaign, we want to show that seafarers do matter. We want to create a platform to give ports and seafarers centres the opportunity to demonstrate how much seafarers matter to them”.
See the complete IMO Secretary-General message here.
Special activities shall be organized for seafarers on that Day, for example social event organised in port to celebrate seafarers; public open day at seafarer centres, free wi-fi in port for a day, etc.
World Map
IMO has created an interactive world map showcasing best practices in seafarer support and welfare.
The Virtual Wall
Seafarers are also invited to share their photos on IMO’s “Photo Wall”, a webpage which invites people to upload photos of their time at sea.
Dromon is encouraging everyone to get involved in the campaign. You can start spreading the message on social media using the campaign hashtag #Seafarers Matter.
