Reporting procedures for loss of containers

At its 81st session, the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) adopted Resolution MEPC.384(81), which enters into force on 01 January 2026 and adds a new paragraph on the reporting procedures for the loss of containers to MARPOL Protocol I – Provisions concerning reports on incidents involving harmful substances.

The amendment requires the loss of freight container(s) to be reported in accordance with the requirements on danger messages as per Regulations V/31 and V/32 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974.

Reports are to be made by the fastest telecommunications channels available with the highest possible priority to the nearest coastal State.

Ship owners, managers, and operators should ensure that all Masters are aware of the reporting requirements detailed in MARPOL Protocol I as amended by MEPC.384(81), and are guided accordingly.
