CIC on Ship Lifting Appliances – Riyadh MoU
Notice to: Ship Owners / Managers/ Operators / Surveyors / Auditors / DPAs / Masters :
C24041 | 26 August 2024
The Riyadh MoU has issued a Press Release advising that they are launching a Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on Ships Lifting Appliances, running from 1 September 2024 to 30 November 2024.
The objectives of the CIC are to ensure that crew members:
- are properly trained and familiar with the different types of crane equipment;
- can promptly spot any potential hazards;
- know what actions to take in an emergency;
- have the necessary qualifications for their specific roles;
- have access to up-to-date safety manuals that set out best practices for each task; and
- perform periodic maintenance on the ships’ lifting equipment and devices.
It is the intention to inspect as many ships as possible in conjunction with routine Port State Control inspections. Each ship will be subject to only one inspection under this CIC.
Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) will use a list of 10 questions to assess:
- the adequacy and adherence of Ships Lifting Appliances and equipment to the relevant requirements;
- that the Master and crew members are familiar with operations relating to Ships Lifting Appliances; and
- that equipment is properly maintained and functioning.
The Press Release includes the checklist to be used by the PSC Officers and can be found here.

Ship Owners, Managers, Operators, Surveyors, Auditors, DPAs and Masters of vessels calling at ports within the Riyadh MoU (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar, State of Kuwait) should ensure that their ships are well prepared for the Concentrated Inspection Campaign and that the items in the checklist are all in order
